The Gorilla Theatre, located in Tampa, was founded by Aubrey Hampton and Susan Hussey in 1993 after they decided they wanted to venture into the field of playwriting and production. In 1998, Gorilla Theatre has expanded to a full season offering performances year round featuring popular musicals and challenging plays. It has since grown into the only equity theatre in Tampa and features an eclectic season of original works, contemporary comedies and dramas as well as classics, musical reviews and free staged readings of new scripts. For a more relaxed form of entertainment, visitors may enjoy a scenic walk over Tampa Bay along the Friendship Trail Bridge. The bridge has an inspirational history. Formerly known as the old Gandy Bridge, it was scheduled for demolition in 1997. After a group of citizens organized a campaign to save it, the bridge was taken over by the Boards of County Commissioners of Pinellas and Hillsborough counties and rehabilitated for public use. Approximately 250,000 people now use the Friendship Trail Bridge each year. Just over two-and-a-half miles long, Friendship TrailBridge is popular with walkers, joggers, bicyclists, in-line skaters and fishermen.

Tampa residents also enjoy a strong arts community. The Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Tampa Museum of Art, Henry B. Plant Museum and Tampa Theatre are all located downtown, providing plenty of opportunities for enjoying the fine and performing arts. The performing arts center hosts a wide range of classes, concerts, plays and other events, covering several genres. The Tampa Museum of Art maintains a large collection of contemporary art as well as ancient Greek and Roman pieces and the Henry B. Plant Museum is dedicated to the preservation of turn-of-the-century Florida culture.
